Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I have to audition for the choir?

A. No. It is open to all keen singers of all abilities. Just turn up, no need to audition.

Q. Who is the choir open to?

A. The choir is open to all ages, nationalities and professions. It is a community choir and we like the cosmopolitan feel of a truly mixed group of singers. The choir is secular; we are not ‘religious’ in any way or form. The key thing is to have fun and enjoy singing as a group.

Q. What sort of music does the choir sing?

A. We sing music from all genres. We have performed classical, jazzy and pop songs, world music, Indonesian folk songs (lagu daerah), Children's songs, movie soundtracks, Broadway musicals, oldies, ballads, and Christmas carols.

Our repertoire includes songs not only in English and Indonesian, but also Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish and even Cebuano, Gaelic, Maranao, Swahili and Zulu.

Q. Do I have to be able to read music?

A. Not necessary, but it is certainly helpful. Sometimes our musical director provides us with a recording of a song we may be rehearsing, so we can listen to our part (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). However, it would certainly be an advantage if you make an effort to learn how to read music, as you move on. Some of our choristers are musically literate and can also assist you. We will also give you a guide on how to read music when you join.

Q. What if I don’t know what part to sing?

A. Our awesome musical director will assist you in finding the ‘best fit’ for your voice range, either soprano, alto, tenor, or bass. Quite often our choristers switch from one voice part to another.

Q. When does the choir year begin and end?

A. The choir year usually begins in January/February and ends in November/December. We take a break during holiday season (Idul Fitri and Christmas) or otherwise as needed. From year to year this may change.

Q. How often do you have concerts?

Generally we have one concert in May, one in August/September, and one in December.  We welcome any invitation to sing and perform in schools, university campuses, orphanages, embassies, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and offices, either for public or private events.  However, during the pandemic, we only hold virtual concerts at the end of the season via zoom (live) and on our youtube channel afterwards.
